In the Academy’s projects, its scientific members collaborate with external experts from academia and industry. The results of this work are presented to policymakers, businesses, the scientific community, and the interested public through publications and events.

As a non-profit association funded by the federal and state governments, the German Academy of Science and Engineering is financed through both public and private sources. Private donations are raised by the acatech Support Association.
The scientific members decide on the Academy’s goals and working methods at the General Assembly. The members of the Senate – the Senators – advise the Academy on strategic matters and, in particular, bring together input from industry. In addition to the General Assembly, the Senate appoints the Academy’s Executive Board on the recommendation of the Board of Trustees.

The Executive Board directs the Academy and represents it externally. The Presidents are Claudia Eckert and Thomas Weber.

In addition to its main headquarters, the acatech FORUM in Munich, acatech maintains offices in Berlin and Brussels.

Under the patronage of the
Federal President of Germany

In June 2017, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier took over as patron of the National Academy of Science and Engineering, following in the footsteps of his predecessors Joachim Gauck, Christian Wulff and Horst Köhler.

The Federal President’s patronage is an indication that the German government has a particular interest in the organisation, initiative or event in question. It is only granted to ventures that have positive impacts for the whole of Germany.
